This study is intended to ascertain the future growth potential of the Memorial Centre Site by providing optional site layouts allowing the addition of a second 80’ x 94’ ft. ice pad and the possible eight (8) sheet rink curling facility for the Royal Kingston Curling Club.
(link to illustration of existing site: opens in new window, because of the size of the graphic.)
Four (4) options have been provided including site and floor plans, comparable costs along with the advantages and disadvantages of each option.
Preliminary estimated costs provided do not include full upgrading of the Memorial Centre, the pool, fair buildings or the International Hockey Hall of Fame.
The costs provided should be considered as a yard stick to assist in comparing the merits of one option to another.
More accurate estimates would be carried out when the final sketches are authorized and which would be based on a selected option.
It is essential that the City determine the immediate and future requirements of the Fair Operation, the size of ice surface and seating capacity for the new ice pad and the status of the existing pool, the Hall of Fame and the International Hockey Hall of Fame.
The options presented provide for a 80’ x 94’ rink surface but site area has been allowed to provide for a larger ice surface if required.
The study allows for an eight (8) sheet rink curling facility.
The City based on the options provided should determine with the Royal Kingston Curling Club what options meet their requirements including time frame, costs, parking arrangements and if they prefer a stand-alone facility.
The site plans indicate a possible parking layout and traffic flow pattern related to surface parking.
Underground parking could be provided to the complete underside of the playing fields and when completed the playing fields would be reestablished in a similar manner to that carried out at Queen’s University.
A full traffic study will be required no
matter which option is selected.
