Concert Jeopardy

March 5, 2008

OVER A DOZEN SHOWS HAVE BEEN BOOKED TO PLAY IN THE KINGSTON SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE BETWEEN NOW AND JUNE.

BUT 2 OF THEM HAVE BEEN CANCELLED, AND A THIRD ONE IS IN JEOPARDY AS WELL.

C-K-W-S NEWS HAS LEARNED THAT COUNTRY SINGER TRACEY LAWRENCE, AND COMEDIAN COLIN MOCHRIE, WON'T BE STOPPING IN KINGSTON.

AND THE CONCERT PROMOTER IS NOW DECIDING WHETHER VEGAS CROONER, ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK, WILL SING HERE.

AS NEWSWATCH'S CHRIS HARVEY REPORTS, POOR TICKET SALES ARE BLAMED.

IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO COME.

NOT JUST THE ACTS, BUT THE PAYING PUBLIC.

THEY SURE DID ON THE OPENING WEEKEND.

BUT SINCE THEN, IT SEEMS NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO SHELL OUT MONEY FOR SOME CONCERTS IN KINGSTON'S NEW ARENA.

CKWS NEWS HAS LEARNED THAT 2 SHOWS HAVE BEEN CANCELLED AND A THIRD IS IN JEOPARDY-- DUE TO A LACK OF TICKET SALES.

THE PROMOTER NEEDS TO SELL 21 HUNDRED ...AT A COST OF 58 TO 99 DOLLARS APIECE... BEFORE ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINCK CAN SET FOOT IN THE ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE IN MAY.

BUT TIME HAS RUN OUT ON TWO OTHER SHOWS HAVE NOW BEEN OFFICIALLY CANCELLED.

TODAY IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT THE MARCH 16TH SHOW FEATURING

TRACEY LAWRENCE AND CRAIG MORGAN... ALONG WITH THE APRIL 19 COMEDY PERFORMANCE BY COLIN MOCHRIE AND BRAD SHERWOOD... HAVE BEEN CANCELLED.

THIS COUNCILLOR IS NOT ALARMED BY THE CANCELLATIONS, JUST TWO WEEKS AFTER THE LVEC OPENED.

HE SAYS PROMOTERS ARE STILL TESTING THE KINGSTON MARKET TO SEE WHAT SELLS, AND WHAT DOESN'T.

ED SMITH:

"GENERALLY IN THE INDUSTRY FROM TIME TO TIME, THERE ARE CONCERTS THAT ARE CANCELLED FOR ANY NUMBER OF REASONS. AND IT DOESN'T SEEM TO AFFECT THE REPUTATION OF THOSE COMMUNITIES OR THOSE CENTRES."

WHILE SOME SHOWS SAG -- OTHERS APPEAR TO BE SOARING.

THE DISNEY ICE SHOW HAS TWO NIGHTS BOOKED THIS WEEK.

CHRIS HARVEY:

"WHILE IT'S AN UNFORTUNATE PART OF THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY THAT SOME SHOWS MAY GET CANCELLED, TICKET SALES FOR OTHER EVENTS LIKE THE MX MOTO CROSS WORLD TOUR ARE MOVING WELL."

"I GOT SIX TICKETS, A TOTAL OF 120 DOLLARS."

"GOOD DEAL"

"OH YEAH, IT'S GOOD FOR THE KIDS."

WOMAN:

"I'M JUST PICKING THEM UP FOR MY SON AND GRAND KIDS. HE COULDN'T GET TO KINGSTON TO GET THEM SO HE ASKED IF I COULD COME DOWN AND GET THEM."

IF YOU BOUGHT TICKETS TO A SHOW THAT ENDS UP BEING CANCELLED, YOU CAN GET THE TICKET PRICE REFUNDED AT THE BOX OFFICE... UNLESS YOU BOUGHT THEM WITH A CREDIT CARD OVER THE PHONE...

RECORDING: "IF THE EVENT IS CANCELLED OR POSTPONED OUR FEES AND CHARGES WILL NOT BE REFUNDED."
