Task force member's parking figures incorrect

Ken Wong tells us in his letter "Kingston needs a new arena, and the best location is downtown" (March 3) that if parking for a large venue entertainment centre was provided onsite, it would add $6 million to the cost of the complex.

Wrong. Parking spaces in a garage construction cost more than $20,000 each. Six million dollars would buy you perhaps 300 spaces. The proposed 6,000-seat LVEC would need 2,600 parking spaces, according to the task force's report. The cost of a 2,600-space garage would be approximately $52 million. For surface parking, 2,600 spaces could be provided for about $3.5 million.

When Ken Wong talks about parking, think "wrong."
